Exploring Saint Peter’s Basilica and the Angels of Ponte Sant’Angelo

Welcome to the Roman Station Church Pilgrim Itinerary with Crux Stationalis, a tradition rich in history and deep spiritual significance. Today, on Quinquagesima Sunday, we find ourselves at the magnificent Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano, or as we know it, in English, Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.

A Journey Across Ponte Sant’Angelo:

Our journey takes us over the iconic Ponte Sant’Angelo, a bridge with a fascinating history. Built in 134 A.D. by Roman Emperor Hadrian, this structure spans the Tiber River, connecting the city center to the imposing Mausoleum, now known as the towering Castle Sant’Angelo.

As we cross the bridge, we are met with the fruit of Bernini’s visionary program. Ten angels grace the bridge, each holding instruments of the Passion. These sculptures, a testament to Bernini’s artistic genius, symbolize the weapons of Christ used to conquer sin and death.

Encountering Angels:

Among the angels, we see the one with a column, bearing the inscription “Tronus meus in columna” (My Throne is upon a column). Another holds whips, quoting Psalm 37, verse 18, expressing readiness for the whip. Bernini, in his personal touch, completed two originals – the angel with the superscription INRI and the one with the crown of thorns.

These angels bear witness to Christ’s sufferings and serve as a poignant reminder of his compassion. The angel with Veronica’s veil, by Cosimo Fancelli, invites us to “look upon the face of thy Christ,” offering a merciful image amid the sufferings.

A Lenten Journey and Spiritual Reflection:

Our Lenten journey intensifies as we approach Passion Sunday. The Gospel narrative for that Sunday echoes Jesus’ words, “Amen, amen, I say to you: before Abraham came to be I am.” This solemn occasion at St. Peter’s in Rome is marked by the unveiling of Veronica’s veil, providing a final glimpse of Jesus’ face before Easter Sunday.

As we gaze upon the angels, each bearing instruments of Christ’s Passion, we are reminded of their role in aiding us on our spiritual journey. Picture Jesus saying to your soul: “Ah Son, satisfy my desires, remember my sufferings, wounds, and death. Compassionate and love me.”

Statues of Saints and Spiritual Significance:

Our journey doesn’t end there. Stepping onto the bridge, we encounter statues of Saints Peter and Paul, the Apostle princes of Rome. Erected in 1535, these statues, stood with those of the evangelists and biblical figures, tributes to our faith.

These remaining statues of Sts. Peter and Paul invite us to reflect on the leadership of Saint Peter and the fearless preaching of Saint Paul.

Conclusion: A Call to Prayer and Reflection:

As our Lenten Journey unfolds, let us not forget the presence of these angels, ever-willing to assist us. We encourage you to seek their guidance and compassion as we collectively compassionate Jesus in his passion.
