Early History
The origins of Santi Apostoli date back to the 6th century when Pope Pelagius I commissioned its construction to commemorate the victory of the Byzantine general Narses over the Ostrogoths. The church was dedicated to the twelve apostles, with a particular emphasis on Saints James and Philip, whose relics are housed within the basilica.
Medieval Period
In 1348, a devastating earthquake struck Rome, causing significant damage to Santi Apostoli. The church remained in a state of disrepair for several decades until Pope Martin V, a member of the Colonna family, initiated restoration efforts in the 15th century. These renovations included the addition of a new portico and the commissioning of frescoes by artists such as Melozzo da Forlì, who painted the Ascension of Christ in the main apse.
Baroque Renovations
The 18th century brought further transformations to Santi Apostoli. Architect Carlo Fontana led a comprehensive Baroque renovation, which involved redesigning the interior and updating the façade. These changes aimed to align the church’s aesthetics with contemporary architectural trends, resulting in the ornate design seen today.
Architectural Features
The basilica’s façade is characterized by its elegant portico, supported by twelve Ionic columns symbolizing the twelve apostles. The interior features a spacious nave flanked by side chapels adorned with intricate frescoes and sculptures. Notably, the tomb of Pope Clement XIV, sculpted by Antonio Canova, is housed within the basilica, showcasing the artistic heritage preserved within its walls.
Modern Significance
Today, Santi Apostoli serves as a minor basilica and continues to function as a parish church. It remains under the care of the Conventual Franciscans, reflecting its enduring religious significance. The basilica stands as a testament to Rome’s layered history, embodying architectural and artistic elements from various periods, and continues to attract visitors and worshippers alike.
The Basilica dei Santi XII Apostoli is not only a place of worship but also a monument encapsulating centuries of Roman history and art. Its evolution from a 6th-century church to its current Baroque form illustrates the dynamic nature of Rome’s architectural and cultural landscape.
