That one time I couldn’t find the body of San Callisto!!! I tell you the story today on the podcast:
This church holds a special place in my heart with this memory from when I first visited and all the fruits that came from that experience.
Here I take you also on a virtual tour of the basilica:
- Tomb of Pope St. Callistus I – The relics of this 3rd-century martyr-pope rest beneath the high altar. Tradition holds that he was thrown into a well and later venerated as a saint.
- Golden Apse Mosaics – Created by Pietro Cavallini, these breathtaking mosaics depict the Madonna enthroned in glory, surrounded by saints, symbolizing the triumph of faith.
- Cosmatesque Floors – Intricate marble inlays in geometric patterns, a hallmark of medieval Roman craftsmanship.
- Flickering Candlelight and Pilgrim Devotion – The basilica’s solemn atmosphere, enhanced by centuries of prayer and devotion, makes it a profound place of reflection.
- One of the Oldest Marian Churches – Santa Maria in Trastevere is among the first churches in Rome dedicated to the Virgin Mary, standing as a testament to the deep roots of Marian devotion.
