First Friday: August 2020

Heart of Jesus, desire of the everlasting hills, have mercy on us!

My devotion to the Sacred Heart certainly increased when I began to go to the Traditional Mass. My parish has a holy hour every Thursday evening and on First Friday of every month a Solemn or Sung Votive Mass of the Sacred Heart with benediction and the First Friday devotions.

Today at Mass, and (whenever I think of the Sacred Heart), I was thinking of all the people to whom I have been connected with through this Devotion. From the two brothers who used to serve the High Mass unfailingly and often the holy hour on Thursdays to that one couple suffering with grief that I encountered when I worked at the Catholic cemeteries as a seminarian. And so on. There’s a communion that I can say is simply a foretaste of heavenly communion.

Just as the invocation — Desire of the Everlasting Hills — tells us: to rest in the Sacred Heart is that opportunity here and now to taste the eternal beatitude that awaits God’s servants. Don’t hesitate to take that rest. In all your burdens, rest.

Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make our hearts like unto Thine!
